AHH Dogs  |  How You Can Help

There is a constant influx of dogs at Almost Home for Hounds. The majority of these dogs have been bred for the racing industry and either have not qualified for, or have finished, racing careers. AHH dogs have a broad range in age from under 12 months to over 10 years, most fall within the 18 month to 3 year bracket. Occasionally Dr. Weir ends up with Coyote Dogs, these are greyhound mixes that have been bred for the sole purpose of hunting Coyote's to keep the population under control.

Every dog that leaves AHH will receive Veterinary care, (spay/neuter, dental, vaccinations, worming, and initial grooming), before being released to waiting adoption groups or adoptive homes.

If you, or your adoption group, would like to have AHH dogs please contact Dr. Weir for further information.

The pictures below are representative of just a few of the AHH dogs. Because Dr. Weir is so busy with the daily tasks associated with running AHH pictures may not be updated as frequently as we would like. We hope someday to have a volunteer with available time and a camera so we can show you more of the lovely dogs at AHH.

Blue - Black Greyhound Mix male ADOPTED
Age - 3
Cat Tolerant - Probable

Blue did  well with initial cat testing, but caution should be exercised upon introductions. Blue is a bit stand-offish until he gets to know you. He responds well when called and has a great attitude, and impeccable manners. He will bond easily with his person and would do well as either an only dog or in a small group setting. Blue appreciates order in his life and would probably do better with older calmer children.

Blue arrived at AHH in late May of 2006 having been used for Coyote hunting in Nebraska. He had been abandoned with 13 other dogs and left to starve to death or fend for himself.  He had an encounter with a porcupine, which left him with ongoing medical issues, those issues seem to be resolved now.

Match - White & Fawn
Age - 6
Cat Tolerant - NO

Match did not do well with initial cat testing, she will do best in a home without small animals. Match is very friendly and loves to be around people. Because Match so desires to be around people, she prefers to not be alone and has developed separation anxiety. She will do best in a home with mature dogs and possibly a dog door to a secure yard. Match will bond easily with her people.

Pearl- Blue Brindle
Age - 8 months
Cat Tolerant - Cat Test Pending

Pearl slipped on the ice and broke her leg while in her pen with her littermates. After two surgeries she seems to be on the mend, but her recovery will take several months. She was a bit insecure at first but has evolved into a very loving dog. She gets along well with the other dogs at AHH so should do fine in a multiple dog home.

Sam- Blue Fawn
Age - 1 year
Cat Tolerant - Cat Test Pending

Sam is named for the gas station that found him playing with two small dogs at the 4-way intersection in Kanab. What a gorgeous, full of life boy he is. A lanky, long, young boy, probably just a bit over one year, his joy of life is infectious. He has full run of the house, and learned the dog door immediately. As with any youngster, human or hound, he's at that point in his life, where he questions you at first, but eventually listens. He really does want to please and be loved.  His best home would be with people that have another dog, a young rough and tumble breed would suit him very well.  He shows interest in cats, but may be workable in the right situation.

Echo - Fawn Female ADOPTED
Age - 3 1/2
Cat Tolerant - NO

Echo did NOT do well with initial cat testing, so would do best in a home without cats, she may do ok with small dogs. Echo is very sweet, and engaging but tends to prefer getting her way with the other dogs.  Echo would probably NOT do well with young children.

Echo arrived at AHH with symmetrical lupoid onchodystrophy, which is an auto-immune disease limited to the toe-nailbed. This causes the toenails to be shed prematurely. She has been well controlled for the past year with the supplementation of fish oil capsules.

Jill - Black & White Ticked Female ADOPTED
Age - 2
Cat Tolerant - Probable

Jill is a good natured girl with loads of personality. She seems to have center of attention syndrome, and enjoys life thoroughly. Jill is tons of fun and very active. She would enjoy a more active lifestyle in her future home. Because Jill is so exuberant, she would not likely do well with small children.

Mariah - Red Female
Age - 9 months
Cat Tolerant - Cat Test Pending

Mariah has been at AHH since she was 6 weeks old. She was handed over because she has a blind eye. During her first weeks at AHH it became apparent that Mariah had something else going on as well. Mariah has had unexplained episodes of aggression. This seems to be improving as she ages and receives consistent handling and socialization. However, it has been determined that Mariah should not be placed in a permanent home until she is fully mature and shows no further signs of aggression.

If you would like to sponsor Mariah it would be appreciated.

Mabel - Brindle Female ADOPTED
Age - 3
Cat Tolerant - Cat Test Pending

Mabel is a very sweet and patient girl. She has adjusted well to life on three legs and gets along very well with others. She has done well with the many visitors that come to AHH, but would probably appreciate a quieter home.

Mabel arrived at AHH with a severe hock fracture. It was determined that repair was not an option for Mabel so the leg had to be amputated. The amputation was performed in December, she is well healed and ready for a home.
